Promoting Menstrual Hygiene Education (MHE)
Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) is a pertinent issue not only for sexual and reproductive health and family planning, but also for women’s and adolescent girls’ empowerment and social justice. Girls/women are not fully aware and educated about menstrual hygiene in the rural areas of Nepal. During menstrual cycle period, most of the women in rural areas uses pieces of clothes, while adolescent girls practice using sanitary pads whenever available. Menstruation has been affecting various aspects like education, health, economics, dignity, and participation of a girl/woman in various events in life.
Hence, this project aims to bring change in the community of Konjyosome Rural Municipality of Lalitpur district through awareness activities about menstrual hygiene among girls and women. This project will initiate the production and distribution of reusable sanitary pads at the local level, thereby increasing the use of reusable sanitary napkins by girls/women during their menstruation, improving their participation in social, economical, and educational events even during their menstruation period. The use of reusable sanitary pads will also contribute to the household and local community’s savings by the reduction of the use of disposable sanitary pads.
